FAQ
Question:
The program reports "The file with the proxy servers could
not be loaded from the internet. If so, establish a connection to the
internet"
when starting an anonymous session, although there already is a
connection to the internet.
Answer:
If you are using a personal firewall, you have to tell this
firewall that the programs winsweep.exe, wsmonitor.exe and wschecker.exe
need access to the internet. Those programs mentioned try via HTTP-protocol
to load data from the internet, among others the current list of anonymizing
proxy servers. Unfortunately, WINSWEEP cannot recognize if the access
to the internet is blocked by a firewall program and therefore reports
the error.
Question:
The error message <cannot find next cache entry 122>
appears.
Answer:
This error
message can appear, if one file cannot be deleted during the deletion of the temporary internet
files . WINSWEEP calls the Internet Explorer
by itself to finally delete the temporary internet files from the
cache of the Internet Explorer after it has overwritten and encoded
the temporary internet files.
By doing so this error message sometimes appears. To begin with delete
the temporary internet files once by using the following path start ->
control panel
-> internet options -> delete files.
Question:
How can I check, whether the anonymous internet connection is
being established?
Answer:
Establish a normal internet connection, access the page http://www.winsweep.net/cgi-bin/ip.cgi
and check the display of your IP-address. Establish an anonymous
internet connection via WINSWEEP and access the page once again. There should
now be a different IP-address or none at all.
Question:
The WebWasher is
installed and the anonymous surfing does not work. What can I do?
Answer:
Deactivate the WebWasher or access the settings of the WebWasher
and activate the option <Proxy-Engine ->
Client>. There enter under <HTTP1:> and <Port> the same
values which in the WINSWEEP options are entered under <Host>
and <Port>.
Instructions for WINSWEEP 3
Data protection for the internet-PC
Surf anonymously
Now click on the button <surf anonymously>. The anonymous
internet session is started. If necessary, you can choose a server in
the
<settings> on the tab <surf anonymously>, via which your
internet sessions should be rerouted. There you can determine as well via how many servers the internet session should be rerouted. Please
note that with a high value it can take several minutes to establish
a connection with the internet. First, the internet has to be searched
for functioning proxy servers with sufficient speed. You can test
your anonymity on the internet page http://www.winsweep.net/cgi-bin/ip.cgi
. Here your present IP-address will be identified and shown.
Please note that the access to the internet will be slightly delayed
by the rerouting via other servers. Furthermore, it is possible that
some of the listed anonymizing internet servers are temporarily not
available. In this case just choose another server. During the current
internet session WINSWEEP is inactive. You have to close the Internet Explorer
first before you can work with WINSWEEP again.
Surf anonymously and securely
Click on the button <surf anonymously + securely>. After you have finished the
secure internet session started by WINSWEEP, the normal internet mode
will be set automatically. Please note that this option is only active
if you chose the Microsoft Internet Explorer in the options. The other
browsers as a standard ignore ActiveX-controls and provide their own popup-blocker.
Destruction of surfing traces
Click on the button <Destroy surfing traces>. The program
searches your hard disk and deletes temporary files together with the local
surfing traces which your browser left on your system.
In case you chose the option <start automatically with> in the
settings, this function is performed automatically at each start of
the system and at each new login. We recommend to set this option.
All
temporary files and the local surfing traces are irrevocably
overwritten and deleted! Depending on the basic settings, the files
found are additionally encoded and/or overwritten several times with a
binary pattern. A reconstruction of the files deleted is therefore no
longer possible. The deleted files are not moved to the recycle bin
but are deleted irrevocably!
Destruction
of files
Here you have the possibilty to also destroy files which were not
created during an internet session. There might be confidential files
on your hard disk which have to be destroyed fast and securely.
Chose the files to be deleted through a file selection dialogue and
then click on <destroy>. All files in the list, after a security
check, will then be overwritten and destroyed irrevocably!
In
the column <search & delete> it is possible to choose in the settings , which
kind of files the program should search. We recommend to set all
options to secure the maximum data protection.
<Temporary files>
This means temporary files are created by various programs on your system.
<Temporary
internet files>
Pictures and pages from the internet created by the internet browser.
<Cookies>
Information stored on your system by the internet pages.
The content varies. In general the date of your latest visit is stored
and data entered into forms of internet pages.
<History>
Stored internet addresses. Porvided there is relevant know-how, all internet
addresses visited by you recently can be reconstructed. Among others
the history can be seen with the
Windows Explorer and of course with the Microsoft Internet Explorer!
<Document history>
The content of the menu <documents> in the Windows start menu
will be deleted.
<Remove
unnecessary
files weekly>
The system will be searched
and cleaned
of unnecessary garbage files. This cleanup takes place once a
week on a Friday.
Please note that the search for such files can take several minutes.
<Daily
check for viruses>
Once a day the system is searched for the most dangerous and most
active viruses and worms.
The most recently known viruses such as Dumaru, Sobig, Mimail, Klez, Elkern, Bugbear oder Yaha werden gesucht und beseitigt. Erkannt und gegebenenfalls beseitigt werden:
BackDoor-AQJ BackDoor-JZ Bat/Mumu.worm Exploit-DcomRpc IPCScan IRC/Flood.ap
IRC/Flood.bi IRC/Flood.cd NTServiceLoader PWS-Narod PWS-Sincom.dll W32/Anig.worm
W32/Bagle@MM W32/Blaster.worm (Lovsan) W32/Bugbear@MM W32/Deborm.worm.gen W32/Doomjuice.worm W32/Dumaru
W32/Elkern.cav W32/Fizzer.gen@MM W32/FunLove W32/Klez W32/Lirva W32/Lovgate
W32/Mimail W32/MoFei.worm W32/Mumu.b.worm W32/MyDoom W32/Nachi.worm W32/Netsky
W32/Nimda W32/Pate W32/Sdbot.worm.gen
W32/SirCam@MM W32/Sober W32/Sobig W32/SQLSlammer.worm W32/Swen@MM W32/Yaha@MM.
For this purpose the free anti virus program "McAfee AVERT Stinger" is
automatically loaded and executed from the internet. Eventually inform
yourself about the
terms
of the manufacturer. The program "McAfee AVERT Stinger" of
the company Network Associates Corporate is not included in the
delivery of WINSWEEP. Also it cannot replace an adequate anti virus
program, as only the viruses and worms mentioned above are recognized
and removed but it offers a very good protection against the most
common viruses and worms. Please note that the check for viruses can
take several minutes but you can still work with the computer while
the check for viruses is running.
<Block Flash-animations
completely>
With this switch all Flash-animations are switched off completely. This
might lead to internet pages not being displayed completely. But it
also leads to the prevention of many pop-ups of adverts in your
browser.
<Recycle
bin>
The content of the recycle bin.
<Delete
content of the swap file>
The swap file
of the virtual memory
created by Windows
can
under
certain circumstances
contain sensitive data which could
later
be reviewed
by nosy people. If this option is activated the content of the swap
file is deleted when the system is shutdown by Windows. This option is
only available with Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
<Activate security deletion mode>
If you switch off the security deletion mode files will be deleted
faster but they are not destroyed securely!
<Encode
files before deletion>
The content of files to be deleted will be encoded before the deletion
to make a reconstruction of the content impossible.
<Overwrite
files before deletion>
Additionally to the encoding you can set whether the files to be
deleted should be overwritten with a character of your choice before
deletion. For this, under <to overwrite files how often before
deletion> and <overwrite with the value>,
set how many times and with which character the files should be
overwritten before deletion. The more often the process of overwriting
is performed the more securely the file is destroyed. But of course the
process will then take longer accordingly.
<Start automatically with Windows>
If this option is set the program ist automatically started together
with Windows and performs the search- and delete operation
automatically with each start of the system.
<start
automatically when the browser is terminated>
If this option is set, the cleanup process is started automatically
when the browser is terminated.
<Bosskey>
If this option is activated, you can have the system cleaned at
lightning speed by pressing the keys <WIN+C>. All browser
windows will be closed immediately and the system is cleaned in the
background without any feedback.
<Exceptions>
Enter here file names and/or name patterns which, by no means, should be
removed when the program removes the internet-files. Attention! This
setting has no effect on the function
<destroy>!
Here complete paths and file names can be entered or parts of names.
The use of * and/or ? is possible (* stands for any amount of
characters, ? stand for one optional character).
Please note that this exception is only valid for cookies and for
temporary files.
<Browser>
Set the browser you use
here. With the start of a anonymized internet
session the browser set here is started. The cleanup process for the
destruction of local surfing traces considers all browsers mentioned
here, independent of this pre-setting. If you use the browsers Netscape- or Mozilla,
the surfing traces and cookies are deleted from all profiles of these
browsers.
<Popup-blocker>
Here you can set the active popup-blocker for the Internet Explorer. <Activate
popup-blocker level 1> will cause the Internet Explorer to only
open 1 window per session. Each additional window which should be
opened during a current session of the Internet Explorer, is disabled.
Through that, annoying popup-windows and advertising banners can no
longer appear. But it might be that useful and wanted windows are
disabled. Should you desire that the Internet Explorer should open
further windows anyway, you have to keep the <STRG>-key pressed.
During that time the Internet Explorer can open further windows. If
you let go the <STRG>-key, the opening of new windows will be
disabled again.
<Switch to popup-blocker level 2> results in the Internet
Explorer being able only to open 1 window. Contrary to many other popup-blockers WINSWEEP
does not filter any JavaScript-code from the internet pages to be
displayed or closes opening windows at lightning speed after they
have been opened. Instead WINSWEEP monitors the Internet Explorer and
disables the opening of further browser windows before opening. Hence
there is no time loss.
<Secure favourites>
Here you can define security settings for frequently visited internet
pages. You can insert urls in the list of favourites and determine
whether these pages are accessed in the secure and/or anonymous internet
mode. With a double click you can comfortably surf your favourite pages
anonymously on the internet. Accessing the WINSWEEP-favourites works
fastest by pressing the keys <WIN+V> or with a right hand click of
the mouse on the WINSWEEP-monitor icon, which is located at the bottom
right of the screen (next to the system clock). Then click on the menu
item favourites. These favourites will be encoded and can only be
accessed with a password. If you have forgotten your password the favourites
cannot be encoded anymore. Queries at the support regarding lost
passwords and therefore are futile.
Blocking of advertisements
Under the tab <user defined server list> you can enter internet
addresses from which you do not want to receive any content any
longer. You might know servers or internet pages which you want to
block. For that, simply enter the IP-address or the name of the domain
of the server and click on <add>. Please note that it has to
contain the internet protocol (http://, https:// etc.). Just enter www.domain.* or domain.* or
if you are not sure both.
The * stands for the relevant domain identification, normally .de or .com.
E.g. for blocking of the server http://www.cometcursor.com, just enter www.cometcursor.com
and cometcursor.com in the
<user defined server list>. WINSWEEP takes care that in the
future your system will not accept data from this server.
Even the direct call of these domains in the browser is then no longer
possible. To cancel this blockage again, remove the domain name from
the list again.
Under
the tab <standard server list> thousands of servers are listed
which are included in WINSWEEP. Here you can also make changes, however,
those changes are lost after an internet update. Therefore, only enter
individual data under the tab <user defined server list>!
The switch <optimize
for high performance computers> results in a greater protection of
advertising from the internet. Significantly more advertising servers
will be recognized and blocked then in the standard configuration. But,
your computer should have at least
128 MB RAM and a powerful Pentium III-, Pentium IV- or Athlon-CPU.
From version 3.1 this switch does not apply anymore. WINSWEEP sets
the blockage of advertising automatically on the basis of the size of
the random access memory (RAM).
